My goals for this year hit a lot of bumps. There were a few direction and value changes as well to be considered. My fitness goal of benching 70kgs by the end of the year died early on when somebody accidentally broke my bench. I replaced it a few days ago and am currently dumb-pressing 16kg in each hand to ease myself back into things. Teaching myself violin also died off pretty quickly when it became apparent how much preparation is required to go from getting the instrument out of the case to actually starting to practice playing something. My creativity goal was to get serious about stand up comedy. I had one bad set and saw how much it affected me and decided to give that one some space before taking it up again. I did at least make a step toward my driver licence goal for career goals. I went through the process of getting a learner licence and got intimidated out of actually being able to take the next step because of some graphic gore videos I was forced to watch as part of the process.
As far as my stated goals, this year has been pretty much a write off aside from a small degree of progress for the driver licence goal. I have been doing other stuff though.
This year I did a month long trip around Europe with P, adopted some kittens with G, completed a First Aid for Mental Health qualification with a view to potentially teaching the course when it is ready for public roll-out, and joined an established weekly D&D group which is probably a better social outlet that my online gaming guild.
In light of my shift in values over the past year, my goals for this year are as follows:
1) Health and Fitness: In addition to maintaining the four hours per week of cycling I've worked into my routine, I want to work three sets of some type of anaerobic resistance training into each day as part of my morning ritual. If this is an established habit by the end of the year then this goal is met.
2) Musical/Brain Plasticity: I'm going with piano this year for the lower motivation barriers and because I do at least have a little experience with the instrument. I've even set up a keyboard in the living room. I want to develop a habit of practicing some kind of piano interaction for at least twenty minutes each day.
3) Creative/Social: Dungeons and Dragons, and role playing games in general, have been very helpful to me in the past for fleshing out worlds to set stories in. This year, I want to utilise my access to a regular game gathering to run self devised sessions with engaging and thought provoking storylines. I also want to write a few short stories set in the world that I create.
4) Career: This year as with the last, the biggest limiting factor in my career options is the lack of a driver licence. This year's goal is to book in and attend a minimum of one professional driving lesson per month. If friends with cars and open licences want to risk both by putting me behind the wheel that is a bonus, but not something I can allow myself to rely on.
